Drawing: The Painter’s Foundation

This class is designed as a first step for those wishing to take painting classes or anyone wishing to improve drawing skills. You will study drawing with charcoal on paper.
Students will begin by sketching still life objects to learn the basics of visual vocabulary then go on to create form and volume using the broad stroke by building and manipulating tones and values. With the use of charcoal, students will create 3-D form using both the additive and reductive method of drawing. Basic Perspective, accurate proportions and the basics of composition and visual vocabulary will be covered.
Supplies: Students will need to provide the following:
- Paper: 18”x24” 50 sht. Newsprint Pad
- Support: Heavy weight 20”x30” Foam Core cut to size plus 2 heavy duty bull dog clips
- Charcoal:
- Conte Compressed charcoal; 2-B and 3-B 1 stick each (or) Conte Crayon 2-B Package of 2
- Vine Charcoal; soft
- Peel away Charcoal pencil, Medium
- Eraser: Large Kneaded Eraser
- 8” to 12” square of very soft cotton cloth, like old tee shirt material or Viva Paper Towel
