Watercolor Collage Workshop with Jeni

Watercolor collage workshop with Jeni

Crimson Thread

Crimson Thread, refractured watercolor on panel, 32×32″

  • Tuesday: April 21st and May 26th – 6-8:30pm,
  • $50 per person: contact Jeni at skyscapesforthesoul@gmail.comor (310) 720-1552 to confirm attendance and arrange to pay by check/cash.
  • 6-15 students per class
  • Level: Just for fun! Anyone who is old enough to be trusted with scissors, glue and paint, and who has or (hopes to find in themselves) a little bit of an imagination and would like to have fun trying this.  Age guide 10+ or 6+ if parent/guardian is also taking the class.

The “refractured watercolor” medium is all transparent watercolor on watercolor paper.  I paint each sky or water reflection one or more times, depending on the size I am working to.  Each variant is in slightly different colors and because it is wet in wet it is always a little different each time.  Then I cut them and collage back together.  Inevitably there are pieces of the original watercolor paintings left over. These are the true collages.  This workshop gives you a fun opportunity to explore the creativity possible with this medium.

About Jeni

Jeni Bate

Jeni Bate

“I paint the skies with peace and passion, because that’s the way they paint me.”

My medium is sky; I work in many different mediums to depict it: watercolor, acrylic, murals, oil, refractured watercolor/watercolor collage and mixtures of the above.  Each offers different possibilities and have different strengths and restrictions.  I also love working on different surfaces such as wood, metal or fiberglass.

Painting was a frequent joy as a child growing up in Wales and I dreamed of becoming a skyscapist.  I have a photo of me aged about 4 ½ painting at my little easel, and the painting I have finished is a sky.  I moved to Southern California in 1995 and after moving to Malibu in 2001, I had an opportunity to work on photography skills.  Five months later I was having difficulty getting my mind off one particular photograph I had taken. I had an epiphany:“Now, you have to paint!”.

In 2004 I moved to Salton City and started painting skies again and found them a subject with universal appeal.  Though I frequently experiment with new mediums and surfaces, the sky remains the major influence in my work.
