David Schlegel
The images in David Schlegel’s art are derived from the landscapes and architecture of the temperate zones – quiet places which could be in the South West, Mexico, Greece or Turkey, where he has traveled, or the deserts and coast of southern California where he lives and works in Carlsbad.
His work, particularly his drawings, are calligraphic and evoke a sense of place – part fantasy, part reality – rendered in a personal style with strong linear emphasis.
David received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture from the university of California at San Diego, where he studied under Miriam Shapiro, Paul Brach and Newton Harrison. His work is in private collections and has been exhibited in the San Diego Museum of Art, the Long Beach Museum of Art, Long Beach, California, the Penthouse Gallery, the Knowles Gallery, the Spectrum Gallery, Muir College, the Unicorn Gallery, San Diego, the COAL gallery, Carlsbad, California and the Cheltenham Art Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“A Sense of Place”
I contemplate what I see as when I
Hear music play just notes, no words required,
Transported then by color, shape and form
That to my eye evokes a sense of place,
Of places that I somehow sense I’ve been,
Or places where I somehow yearn to go,
And make my notes in color, shape and form
Lest I lose what seems that sense of place,
Of places that reside inside of me.
